Service Description

Curious about working with clay? This one-time workshop is a hands-on introduction to both wheel throwing and hand building — perfect for beginners or anyone who’s ever wanted to get their hands dirty and try something new. Participants will learn the basics of centering clay on the wheel, shaping simple forms, and exploring hand building techniques like coiling and slab construction. The session includes step-by-step demos and one-on-one guidance, so everyone can move at their own pace while experimenting with form and texture. By the end, you’ll have a deeper appreciation for the pottery process. No experience necessary — wear old clothes you don't mind getting dirty, and bring your curiosity and a willingness to learn! Kids above 7 are welcome to sign up with a parent. Saving pieces you've created: If you create something that you want to continue working on and keep, the charge would be $5 per piece to cover clay, firings and glazing, and students would then return for open studio time to complete pieces at an hourly rate of $25/hour. About the Instructor David Chatson is a Boston-based ceramic artist and teacher who loves helping people discover the joy of clay. While he enjoys every part of the process, he feels most at home at the wheel. His classes in wheel throwing and hand building invite students to slow down, get messy, and enjoy the rhythm of making. Teaching in studios across the Boston area, he helps students build confidence and connection through the creative process.
